The Montessori methodology was developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician who determined that when children have the proper tools in a prepared environment, they follow their natural interests. The Montessori methodology promotes a self-paced learning process that fosters children’s innate interests and desires. This methodology helps children develop self-discipline and independence while working with tools that are made from natural materials.
Montessori’s approach on “following the child” is at the core of our philosophy at Nido Montessori School.
Our school encompasses the following principles:
One of the key components of the Montessori philosophy is mixed age groups in classrooms. This setting helps older children solidify the knowledge by teaching it to younger children and the young children are inspired by their older classmates to explore different materials.
The prepared environment is one of the core principles of the Montessori education and is rendered as one of the most important aspects of helping children develop their independence from adults. In a Montessori classroom, the prepared environment allows children to explore their uniqueness while working with materials that are developmentally appropriate. Children can attain structure and order in their mind as a direct result of the order in the environment. This prepared environment helps create three long-term benefits: increased concentration, functional independence, and increased confidence.
The prepared environment is well-thought, easy to reach, and sectioned to help in the development of children in different aspects. This development can range from mastering practical life activities to developing language, sensorial, and math abilities. The prepared environment contains materials that follow a simple logical way through which children can independently move to work on activities that are of their direct interest.
Montessori material features hands-on material that introduces complex concepts in a more realistic fashion. This allows for control of error, allowing for children to learn to develop self-correctness by not depending on adults.
Starting in our programs for the young infants, children learn to respect the work of their peers, speak calmly without interrupting, and care for the other children, animals, and plants in their classrooms.
Our Montessori teachers, who are commonly known as Guides, go through rigorous independent certification programs to complement their academic credentials. We have certified and trained teachers who have more than six years of experience working with children aged one through six. Our Guides focus on getting to know the child intimately through observation and working closely with them during the day.
We invite you to schedule a visit to see if Montessori is a good fit for you and your child.
“A child who has become master of his acts through long and repeated exercises, and who has been encouraged by the pleasant and interesting activities in which he has been engaged, is a child filled with health and joy and remarkable for his calmness and discipline.” – Dr. Maria Montessori
